Seputla Sebogodi, a seasoned performer, has opened up about his hardships in the entertainment industry.

Best renowned for his appearances in The River and Generations, where he played the legendary Kenneth Mashaba, he appeared on King David’s podcast to discuss his life, career, and love.

“This year, I turned down five soap opera or drama programs. Because you ask, ‘Can you speak Zulu’? My brother, if you don’t speak Zulu, you’ll go hungry. Tell me one soapie without Zulus, and I’ll give you a million (rand). In South Africa, if you don’t speak Zulu, you’re as good as scrambled eggs. It’s a major deal.

The actor won his second South African Film and Television Award (Safta) two years ago for his role as Soshanguve rebel leader Moses in The Republic.Ezoic

Seputla’s first Safta, for his role as Mashaba in Generations, was destroyed in a home invasion in 2010. When he received his second, he became really emotional.

“It was puzzling for me because, while they stole it, it had my name on it. Why break it? “I remember my mother saying, ‘My son, you will win another one,” the actor told Sowetan.

“When the old lady said that, I wanted to tell her it wasn’t like buying chips at the store. You must go through a process of giving your all and competing against the best in the industry.”
